When You're Supporting Someone Who’s Struggling

If someone you love is battling anxiety, depression, or another mental health challenge, thank you for staying.

Loving someone through a difficult season isn't easy. There are moments when you don't know what to say, when you don't know how to help, and when you wish you could take their pain away but can't.

One of the hardest things to accept is that you can't always fix what someone is feeling. And while that instinct comes from a good place, sometimes the most important thing you can offer is not a solution, but your presence.

Listen before you try to fix. Let them know their feelings are real, even if you don't fully understand them. A simple "I'm sorry you're carrying this" can mean more than an explanation for why they shouldn't feel that way.

And remind them they are loved.

Mental health struggles often convince people they are a burden or that the people around them would be better off without them. Sometimes they need to hear the truth from someone else because they can't believe it for themselves.

If you're walking alongside someone who is struggling, your willingness to stay, listen, and love them may be doing more than you realize.
